Ontario Supporting Hydrogen Project in Township of King

Capital Power to receive $206,300 to add more clean electricity from hydrogen and reduce emissions

November 23, 2023

Township of King – The Ontario government is investing $5.9 million through the province’s Hydrogen Innovation Fund to support nine new projects, including Capital Power in King. As part of Ontario’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, the government is supporting projects that pave the way for the production of reliable, affordable and clean electricity from hydrogen to help power the province’s growth

Capital Power is receiving $206,300 for their Brampton, Windsor and Township of King locations to study the feasibility of blending hydrogen with natural gas (between 5% to 15% hydrogen at existing generation facilities.

“Our government is building new electricity generation and storage to power the next major international investment, the new homes we are building and industries as they grow and electrify,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. “Natural gas currently performs a critical role keeping the lights on during periods of peak demand, and we are investing now in new technologies like hydrogen that could help meet this demand going forward.”

“I’m so pleased to be working with Minister Smith to accelerate the province’s low-carbon hydrogen economy with new funding that will leverage York-Simcoe’s talent, infrastructure and resources,” said MPP Caroline Mulroney, President of the Treasury Board, Minister of Francophone Affairs.  “I’m thrilled Capital Power will help drive job creation and economic growth across York-Simcoe while supporting Ontario’s growing electricity grid.”

The Hydrogen Innovation Fund, administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator, includes new and existing facilities that will provide real-world demonstrations of hydrogen production and consumption, and help pave the way for the production of clean, reliable and affordable electricity from hydrogen to help power the province’s growth.

These investments build on Ontario’s clean energy advantage as the government makes progress on the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy that laid out eight concrete actions to make Ontario a leader in the latest frontier of energy innovation – the hydrogen economy.

QUICK FACTS

  • In February 2023, Ontario announced it would establish a Hydrogen Innovation Fund that will invest $15 million over the next three years to kickstart and develop opportunities for low-carbon hydrogen to be integrated into Ontario’s clean electricity system, including hydrogen storage.
  • Low-carbon hydrogen is a key component of Ontario’s low-carbon future. It can be used to power vehicles, businesses, industries, and heat homes, while producing little to no greenhouse gases (GHG) or other pollutants.
  • By 2050, the hydrogen economy could create over 100,000 jobs across the province, while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 megatonnes per year. This reduction in GHG emissions would be equivalent to about a quarter of Ontario’s 2005 emissions or removing 15 million cars off the road.
