Capital Power to receive $206,300 to add more clean electricity from hydrogen and reduce emissions<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

November 23, 2023 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Township of King \u2013 The Ontario government is investing $5.9 million through the province\u2019s Hydrogen Innovation Fund to support nine new projects, including Capital Power in King. As part of Ontario\u2019s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy<\/a>, the government is supporting projects that pave the way for the production of reliable, affordable and clean electricity from hydrogen to help power the province\u2019s growth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capital Power is receiving $206,300 for their Brampton, Windsor and Township of King locations to study the feasibility of blending hydrogen with natural gas (between 5% to 15% hydrogen at existing generation facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur government is building new electricity generation and storage to power the next major international investment, the new homes we are building and industries as they grow and electrify,\u201d said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. \u201cNatural gas currently performs a critical role keeping the lights on during periods of peak demand, and we are investing now in new technologies like hydrogen that could help meet this demand going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m so pleased to be working with Minister Smith to accelerate the province\u2019s low-carbon hydrogen economy with new funding that will leverage York-Simcoe\u2019s talent, infrastructure and resources,\u201d said MPP Caroline Mulroney, President of the Treasury Board, Minister of Francophone Affairs.  \u201cI\u2019m thrilled Capital Power will help drive job creation and economic growth across York-Simcoe while supporting Ontario\u2019s growing electricity grid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hydrogen Innovation Fund, administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator, includes new and existing facilities that will provide real-world demonstrations of hydrogen production and consumption, and help pave the way for the production of clean, reliable and affordable electricity from hydrogen to help power the province\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These investments build on Ontario\u2019s clean energy advantage as the government makes progress on the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy<\/a> that laid out eight concrete actions to make Ontario a leader in the latest frontier of energy innovation \u2013 the hydrogen economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
