Province Launches Largest Competitive Energy Procurement in Ontario History
Today, in King Township, Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification and Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness announced that the provincial government is launching the largest competitive energy procurement in Ontario history.
Ontario will also ensure that no new projects may be built in the Holland Marsh and other specialty crop areas as defined by a municipality’s Official Plan and will prohibit ground-mounted solar projects from prime agricultural areas.
Energy demand is growing exponentially, and Ontario’s electricity consumption is forecast to rise by 60 per cent by 2050.
Ontario’s electricity system is among the cleanest in the world, powered by a diverse supply mix, including nuclear, hydroelectric, renewables, natural gas, and biomass.
With energy demand growing rapidly, the provincial government is focused on affordable energy rates. This plan will expand access to affordable energy to families and businesses across Ontario while opposing the regressive Liberal carbon tax.
Unlike the former Liberal government, which imposed energy projects at eight times the market price on unwilling communities, we are putting municipalities in the driver’s seat as we expand energy generation.
