Province Advancing Plan to Refurbish Pickering Nuclear Generating Station
Ontario’s energy demand is expected to grow by 75% by 2050, requiring bold action to ensure the province has the affordable, reliable power it will need in the coming decades.
Minister Lecce announced that our government is proceeding with next steps towards the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station’s “B” units, securing more than 2,000 MW of zero-emission electricity—enough to power two million homes.
This project will create 11,000 jobs annually over 11 years of construction and contribute $19.4 billion to Ontario’s GDP.
Refurbishing the Pickering station will extend its operational life for another 30 years, delivering affordable, reliable, and clean energy while supporting Ontario’s economic growth.
The refurbishment’s Project Definition Phase is already underway, supported by OPG’s $4.1 billion budget, part of a total investment of $6.2 billion to date.
As part of the refurbishment, our government has announced that OPG has signed a $2.1 billion contract with CanAtom that will create more than 2,400 jobs across the province.
The Liberal government planned to shutter Pickering Nuclear Station, turning their backs on 80,000 workers and their families. They hiked hydro rates to the highest on the continent and now want to increase the Carbon Tax, again turning their backs on families and seniors.
Premier Ford stands alone with a bold plan to deliver affordable energy, keep costs low for families, and protect Ontario jobs and supply chains—standing up for Canada against harmful U.S. tariffs.
