Ontario Unveils Location of First New Operating Provincial Park in 40 Years

The Ontario government is moving forward to create the first new full-service, operating provincial park in 40 years, here in Central Ontario!

Bigwind Lake Provincial Park — located near Bracebridge — will provide new opportunities for recreational activities including swimming, hiking, cross-country skiing and overnight camping with 250 campsites and will be less than an hour and a half from York-Simcoe!

Operating parks offer a variety of services and facilities, such as campground camping, roofed accommodations, comfort stations and discovery programs. Non-operating provincial parks offer limited recreational experiences and are not staffed.

Over the coming months, the ministry will engage local Indigenous communities, local municipalities, stakeholders and the public on the proposal.

With more than 12 million visits annually, Ontario Parks is the largest provider of outdoor recreational opportunities in the province.
