Ontario Marks Completion of Darlington Unit 1 Refurbishment Project Five Months Ahead of Schedule

Ontario’s energy demand is expected to grow by 75% by 2050, the equivalent of adding four and a half cities of Toronto to the grid.

The refurbishment of Darlington Unit 1 was completed five months ahead of schedule, adding 875 MW of reliable, affordable, and emissions-free power back to Ontario’s grid—enough to power 875,000 homes.

With 96% of costs spent in Ontario, this $12.8 billion project is expected to generate $90 billion in economic benefits and support over 14,200 jobs annually.

Supported by Ontario’s top labour organizations, including LiUNA, the Power Workers’ Union, UBC Millwrights, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, this project showcases the skill and dedication of over 6,000 Ontario workers who brought the refurbishment to early completion.

Our government’s Affordable Energy Act and strategic investments in nuclear energy position Ontario as a global leader in clean energy, ensuring families benefit from stable, affordable electricity.

Unlike the previous Liberal government, our PC government is sending an on-time and on-budget message to the world as we deliver on our promise of a clean, reliable, and affordable energy future for the next generation.
