Ontario Expanding Nuclear Energy
This government’s open for business approach has resulted in unprecedented investments, from Electric Vehicle and battery manufacturing to critical minerals to green steel, and Ontario is building the electricity generation we need to power this success.
We are starting pre-development work to site Canada’s first new, large-scale nuclear build in over three decades to help meet rising electricity demand, power electrification and fuel the province’s strong economic growth.
Bruce Power will start community consultations and conduct the environmental assessment for federal approval, which is the first step in approvals for a new large-scale nuclear power plant. This work will be conducted with the intent of determining the feasibility of locating up to 4,800 MW of new nuclear electricity generation – enough to power 4.8 million homes.
A new nuclear station would also create thousands of new jobs and generating billions of dollars in economic activity across the province for decades to come, while helping to reduce emissions and further Ontario’s clean electricity advantage.
Initiating this early planning will ensure that the province has a reliable, low-cost and clean option available to power the next major international investment, the new homes being built in the province, and industries and sectors across the province as they grow and electrify.

Ontario Building More Small Modular Reactors to Power Province’s Growth
The government is also working with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to commence planning and licencing for three additional Small Modular Reactors, for a total of four, at the Darlington New Nuclear Site.
Once deployed, these four units would produce a total 1200 MW of electricity, equivalent to powering 1.2 million homes, helping to meet increasing demand from electrification and fuel the province’s strong economic growth.
Building additional SMRs at Darlington would also provide more opportunities for Ontario companies as suppliers of nuclear equipment, components, and services to make further investments to expand their operation to serve the growing SMR market both domestically and abroad.
Supporting new SMR development is part of the government’s larger plan to prepare for electricity demand in the 2030s and 2040s that will build on Ontario’s clean electricity advantage and ensure the province has the power to maintain it’s position as leader in job creation and a magnet for the industries of the future.
